VW's

Postby jeffreyned » Sun Apr 08, 2012 9:56 am

I gotta get my bay window up and about. Never know when I might have to haul some scoots around! Plus I think it will be good to sleep in at rallies.

When it comes to split window buses, messing with them too much seems a lot like choosing a TV200 for a cut-down skelly. Why destroy a classic to build something that was mostly a passing fad? Just my thoughts... :)

Ok, so I went out and pulled the head on my bus engine. I remember a ratta-tat-tat sound when it went and had my suspicions of a valve failure. Those suspicions were confirmed:

My brothers VW Thing group was featured on some cable travel station. He's got three and must be about 20 rollers around town.

To my knowledge they were not 4WD. I think there may have been a precursor built for the military that were 4WD, but I'd have to check my facts. There were some schwimmenwagens that were similar and were for the water!

I haven't seen any passenger Things converted, but it's certainly possible. In the 4X world ANYTHING can be made to be 4WD. Shoot, given enough beer, leisure time, and garage space between Tuna and Gearless, we could do it no problem.

Here's a deal I saw at Winco today:

No back seats in it, but no big deal. Those are easy to come by, and anyway, it makes it easier to get scooters in there! :D (I'm certain two scooters would fit in there easily with no seats in it). Same year as my red one. Upright motor, easy peasy to work on, iconic and cool. If I had the money I'd offer them 700 and end up paying them 800 and feel good about it. (Assuming it runs, but it was at Wilco and seemed to be in running order). The keys were in the ignition, but I didn't steal it. I was, however, tempted to start it up...

i think you throw a 454 in the middle of the van, make a great mid-engine sleeper.

So THAT'S why the kids always slept so soundly on bus rides as toddlers... I always wondered about that.
